Are you resting?

The value of productivity is so ingrained in our culture that we often feel guilty if we don’t accomplish “enough” in a day.

Many of us have internalized the belief that we must always be doing, fixing, producing, and it is so intertwined with our self-worth that we feel there is something wrong with us if we aren’t able to meet those demands.

The reality is that never in human history have we worked as much as we do now. We are not made to sustain this level of productivity. Balance is incredibly important in living a fulfilling, energizing, sustainable life. Rest has to be a part of that equation.

With client I often talk about:

  • How much you are “doing” in a day, and how much you are “being”

  • Burnout in its many forms

  • How to build in rest/restorative time

  • What is getting in the way of you slowing down?

Gentle ways to reclaim rest:

  • Build in a morning or bedtime routine that involves reading, meditating, sitting outside, or some other quiet activity

  • Schedule short 15-minute breaks in your day where you can give yourself a break from being productive

  • If you have PTO you aren’t using, USE IT! Give yourself a day to not do anything.

Rest is not selfish. It’s not indulgent. And it’s also not optional.
